Guidance and Resources History

As we have transitioned from full-time distance learning for all students in spring 2020, to small group in-person instruction in September 2020, to a phased hybrid learning model in February 2021, to full-time in-person learning in September 2021, there has been a variety of state, regional and local guidance and resources shared on our website. The most current guidance, as well as specific OSD plans for in-person instruction, are posted on our In-Person and Remote Learning Updates webpage. More dated guidance and resources are shown below.

2020-21 District Reopening Plan

School starts September 9, 2020 in full-time distance learning model

Thurston County Public Health and Social Services announced on July 30, 2020 that based on current levels of COVID-19 in the community, it did not recommend school districts open for in-person learning in September 2020. As a result, school started in the Olympia School District on September 9 in a full-time distance learning model.

Academic and Operational Fall Contingency Planning Committees

At the outset of the planning for reopening schools, the district formed two planning teams to begin mapping out needs for various scenarios in fall 2020. One of the groups addressed academic needs, and the other reviewed how we could safely operate school inside our physical buildings. As with all planning, the district continued to follow guidance from the governor, health departments and education officials. Workgroups

In addition to the Academic and Operational Fall Contingency Planning Committees, eight workgroups made up of staff, students, families and community members were formed to address specific areas related to plans to reopen schools in fall 2020. The groups included:

  • Three Instructional Workgroups: Elementary School, Middle School and High School
  • Health Advisory Workgroup
  • Family Resources and Supports Workgroup
  • Facility Preparations Workgroup
  • Social-Emotional Learning Workgroup
  • Activities/Athletics Workgroup

Virtual Community Town Halls

To gather feedback from students, staff, families and the community, the district held a series of virtual town halls to review and invite input about committee recommendations for how learning might look in fall 2020. View meeting recordings:

State Guidance

On June 12, 2020, state Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal released state guidance for restarting school in September 2020.

The 55-page “Reopening Washington Schools 2020 District Planning Guide” calls for districts to open schools in fall 2020 in a way that protects student and staff health and safety. School districts unable to meet in-person physical distancing requirements due to lack of space in their buildings may choose from other learning options, including split or rotating schedules with continuous remote learning, a phased-in opening with continuous remote learning, and Continuous Learning 2.0 (remote learning).
