Draft dress code policy to come before board

The Olympia School Board has asked the superintendent to prepare a draft dress code policy for discussion at the November 19 school board meeting.

The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Knox Administrative Center, 1113 Legion Way S.E. in Olympia. View a copy of the draft dress code policy and procedure on the November 19, 2018 Olympia School Board agenda.

In preparing a draft school board policy, the board directed the superintendent to consider initial input to a 7-page district dress code recommendation submitted in October by a board-appointed District Dress Code Citizens Advisory Committee. A copy of the advisory committee’s recommendation, meeting agendas and minutes, and related resources are posted on a District Dress Code Advisory Committee webpage on the school district website.

Since the advisory committee submitted its recommendation, the board sought and received input from elementary, middle and high school principals. Some parents also spoke to the committee’s recommendation at the November 5 school board meeting. During that meeting Superintendent Patrick Murphy honored the work of the advisory committee and said it is important to get widespread feedback on any proposed dress code policy.

If draft dress code policy language is agreed upon by the board, the next step would be to invite widespread community input from OSD families, students, staff and community members before the proposed policy returns to the board for consideration.

While individual schools have rules around dress code, currently there is no district-wide policy about dress code.

Any policy that comes before the school board requires a minimum of two readings (reviews) by the board before it can be considered for approval.
