Smiling Olympia School District StudentOur goal is to support parents in the OSD and provide connections to what is happening within our schools and community. Below are some helpful tips for enrolling your child in school, school hour times, student attendance and opportunities for before or after-school childcare.

Enrolling in School

Children must be five years old on or before August 31 to attend kindergarten and six years of age on or before August 31 to enter first grade. New students are required to provide a birth certificate or other accepted proof of birthdate and immunization records for registration.

*In cases involving court-ordered custody of children, schools must have legal documentation (parenting plan) of restrictions to ensure compliance with court orders.

School Hours

View the school hours for special programs and regular operation hours, one-hour late starts for teacher collaboration, and early dismissal release times.

School Attendance

  • Excused Absences: If your child is absent, notify the school office before school begins to let them know  the reason of the absence and when your child will return to school. Students are asked to bring a written note signed by their parent/legal guardian upon returning.

  • Unexcused Absences: If you do not communicate with the school about your child’s absence, their record will show an “unexcused absence” for that day. Unexcused absences may affect your child’s grade. Regular attendance is extremely important to student learning. Certain non-medical absences may be recorded as “unexcused” even with a note from home.

  • Tardiness: Please ensure your child arrives at school on time each day. Students late to school must be signed in by or have a note from their parent/legal guardian to be admitted to class.
